Ximenes was the pseudonym of Derrick Somerset Macnutt (1902-1971) for puzzles in The Observer between 1939 and 1971. His 1966 book Ximenes on the Art of the Crossword established the so-called "Ximenean" rules for fairness in setting, following on from the principles laid down by Afrit.
